Mashad
Nishapur (Neishabur)
- Located 112 Km west of Mashad, and named after Shapur, Nishapur is the earliest recorded capital of Khorassan. Toghrol Beg, the first of the Seljuks, made it his capital in 1037.
- It has a colorful history of being a thriving literary, artistic, and academnic center. It was the home of Omar Khayyam, Attar, Imamzadeh Mahrugh, and Kamal-Ol-Molk Ghaffari
- Curzon had said of Nishapur, "It has been destroyed and rebuilt more than any other city in the world."
- After it's destruction by the Afghans in 1722, and after Nader Shah made Mashad his capital, Nishapur importance began to fade.
