Maku

  • Maku is about 22 km (13.2 miles) from Turkish border. There is not much to see in Maku but it is a good place to stay if you want to cross the border.

  • Maku is located in a mountain gorge and you can hike on the hills although due to closeness to the border, you have to be careful not to cross the border.

  • While in Maku, you can visit small Urartian citadel of Sangar approximately 10 km (6 miles) to the west of Maku. Also, you visit Maku Palace which dates back to Ghajar period. It is presently a museum but it used to be the house of a local governor until 1974.

  • Khoy is a connecting town between Maku and Orumiye so if buses are full, you can take a minibus from Khoy to Maku or Orumiye.
