East Azarbaijan
Jolfa
- There is not much to see in Jolfa except Darre Sham Church which is located 16 km (approximately 9.5 miles) west of Jolfa. Jolfa is a border town between Iran-Azarbaijan.
- The town of Jolfa on the Araxes River in Azarbaijan at one time was the major Armenian settlement until Shah Abbas I imported Armenian families to new Jolfa in Isfahan.
- Darre Sham Church (Church of St. Stephen) is built in the hills and its oldest parts dates back to 14th century (present building dates back to 16th century). This remarkable well preserved monastery is known for its exterior reliefs with angels and crosses. The carved stones on the outer walls are very fine.
- The monastery is located in remote area and is close to Azarbaijan border so it is a good idea to visit by a tour or check with Iranian officials if you plan to visit the church independently. Enjoy the scenery!
